Hey John - nice observation about the shirt... I had to dress him that morning (his mother was sick) and I accidentally put his 7 year old sister's shirt on him... obviously too big, not just in length, but around the neck which made that gap that you commented on. No weird processing... just an ill-fitting shirt.
As to Remask, I used it to soften the background. I created a mask with Remask and then used Photoshop's gaussian blur to create that out of focus look on the background.
I have attached a low-res copy of the original RAW shot so you can see how I used Remask. You might note that I also lightened up the darker shadow on his face. And of course I cropped and straightened the image as well.
